Reports are coming in of the passing of Zig Kanstul, founder of Kanstul Musical Instruments. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Mark and Jack Kanstul and the entire Kanstul family. Zig was a giant in the brass world. KMI is one of only three large, full line brass instrument factories remaining in the US. Zig built a solid reputation for well-made instruments, many of which found wide acceptance, especially in the marching communities. His trumpets and bugles are especially well-regarded.
Zig started his career at famed maker F.E. Olds, and then worked at King and Conn before founding Kanstul Musical Instruments in 1981, according to his bio on the KMI web site. With a clear line of succession and a vibrant manufacturing plant and customer base it is likely KMI will continue operations without interruption.
